Honoring Half a Century of Service at HUCD

Dr. Mercer 50 yrs

In addition to welcoming its newest students, HUCD celebrated the dedication of its faculty and staff, recognizing milestones of service at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 50 years. Among the honorees were two individuals whose careers stand as extraordinary testaments of commitment — Dr. Janis Mercer and Mrs. Romella Rodgers, both of whom reached 50 years of service.

Dr. Janis Mercer (HUCD Class of 1974) has dedicated her career to teaching and training future generations of dentists. She has shaped the academic and clinical preparation of countless students through her work in the pre-clinical Operative Laboratory and the Restorative Dental Clinic. As course coordinator for the second-year Operative Dentistry course, Dr. Mercer’s influence extends beyond instruction — she has been a mentor, guide, and advocate for excellence in dental education for five decades.

Mr. Romella Rodgers, a cornerstone staff member, has contributed half a century of unwavering support to HUCD’s mission. Her work has touched faculty, staff, and students alike, demonstrating the profound impact of dedication and service behind the scenes.

Together, their contributions exemplify HUCD’s enduring strength: a community bound not only by academic achievement but also by loyalty and service. Their recognition at the Pinning Ceremony was both a tribute to the past and an inspiration for the future.
