Oral Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery | Graduate

The program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a four-year program beginning in July of each year. The program is designed to meet the requirements of the Commission on Dental Education Accreditation of the American Dental Association, the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Each resident will devote a minimum of 30 months to clinical oral and maxillofacial surgery, and 12 of the 30 months will be spent at the senior level of responsibility. All residents will be assigned to the medical/surgical services for at least 12 months. Most of the classroom basic science courses and the medical/surgical service rotations will be offered in the first 24 months of the training program.

The program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery consists of a progressively graded sequence of hospital experiences in oral and maxillofacial surgery, formal courses, and lectures and seminars designed to provide vertical integration of theory and practice at all levels of the program.

The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Howard University Hospital has enjoyed a rich heritage of accomplishment and surgical leadership, manifested by the guidance in our surgical faculty. Also important to us, is the success that our former residents have experienced in their careers as they both provide surgical care to the ill and injured throughout the world and participate in the education of young surgeons. To this end, the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery faculty strives to provide an educational experience balanced between clinical service and academic endeavors that is sufficiently flexible to meet the individual needs of each trainee.

Residents gain a broad experience at the various hospitals affiliated with our program. The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Howard University Hospital serves as the primary center of the residency program. However, the surgical residents rotate at thirteen rotations throughout their 4-year residency. This schedule ensures that our residents not only gain experience in all the essential areas of clinical surgery but do so in a varied environment, thereby preparing them for any type of practice they choose to enter.

Together, the entire faculty is committed to the pursuit of excellence in both the clinical and academic arenas. I can assure prospective applicants that our team will do our utmost to make your surgical education pertinent, meaningful, exciting, and enjoyable; we welcome your interest in our residency and hope that you will enjoy your trip through our website.
